A great ending to a great weekend. Seeing and hearing Model 500 close out Movement 2010 in Star Trek TNG uniforms will be on many people’s list of festival highlights. Personally, I’m still amazed that they played an hour and only played one song recorded after 1988. They went deep into the Cybotron catalog (”R9!”) and into Detroit’s memory banks.

It’s hard to walk away from one of these weekends feeling anything less than inspired.

Having a great time down at Hart Plaza, even though I’m not soaking up everything. Should be back down to sign some books around 6:00 p.m. at the Ghostly booth. I haven’t seen the second edition in stores locally as of yet, so I highly recommend picking one up this weekend.

Hopefully I’ll be announcing a signing or two before too long as well. In the meantime,
if you don’t want to hunt around for a copy, your best bet is probably to pre-order from Amazon.

After 10 years of craning my neck at its garish collision of words, I think Techno Rebels taken a turn in the right direction. Maybe we’ve moved beyond the need to telegraph the concept of techno with neon colors and distressed type. If that’s the case, I’m happy. And ironically, maybe the book has been a part of all that.

This cover feels more like there’s a serious topic being examined, and not part of a late ’90s media hype machine. You know, the kind I spend the better part of the first chapter throwing under a giant DDOT bus? I guess the irony was lost the first time around.

The new design system is even more interesting inside, where Courier (of all things) is put to work as an accent. The leading quotes look great this way—I had to keep going back to double check the proof to make sure it wasn’t just an error in generating the PDF.

The only thing I’ll miss is Juan Atkins’ shadow, taken from Lisa Spindler’s 1994 shoot for Wired. But then again, someone pointed out to me today that his baseball cap looks like a duck peeking out over the title.

That’s not exactly how I wanted the Godfather remembered.

Happy to report that we’re that much closer to publication. The second edition of Techno Rebels will come out on Wayne State University’s Painted Turtle imprint sometime in the Spring.
